Shot Selection

90/50/40=180 Shooting

Being a 180 shooter is shooting 90% from the free-throw line, 50% field goal percentage, and shooting 40% from 3 point line.  90+50+40=180.  But we need to explore what shots to increase your percentages while making your practice time more efficient by practicing only using the most effective spots on the floor.

As you can see from this shooting chart how the game has changed in term of shot selection.

Here is more data that justify those claims.

The Most Efficient Shots

  1. Dunks/Low Paint Layups
  2. Corner 3 pointers
  3. Top of the Key 3 pointers

I left free throw off because you can’t decide to shoot a free throw you must be fouled. Although attacking the rim will lead to more free throw attempts. When exploring all of the data we notice a T pattern emerging. The data shows there is a difference in wing 3 point attempts vs Top of the key 3 point attempts. The progression of becoming more efficient on offense will necessitate prioritizing these shots since they produce the highest points per possession. Bottom line for coaches is that you should design or run offenses that will get you these types of shots. As a player you should practice these shots above all others in your workouts. On Defense you should design or run a defense that will take away these shots and force your opponents into less efficient shots.
