Ben Simmons’ Shooting Mechanics

Fri, May 12th, 2018

Ben Simmons is cross-eye dominant which means he is a left-handed shooter but aims with his right eye.  There has been a lot of pressure on Ben Simmons to change his shooting form after a 4-1 defeat to the Celtics. The Celtics placed their Center Al Horford and sagged off of him daring Ben to shoot anything other than a layup.  This is a blueprint of what teams will do next season and if Ben wants to counter this he will need to follow some of the S.E.D.R.S. concepts. Teammate JJ Redick says in Podcast that Simmons’ shooting form is better with his right hand. https://www.slamonline.com/nba/jj-redick-ben-simmons-shooting-form-better-right-hand/ I believe the reason why Simmons shoots well with his right hand is 1. He is ambidextrous and 2. He is right eye dominate.  Look at these pictures of Ben Simmons shooting form.

As you can see Ben shoots the basketball above his right eye like other cross-eye dominant shooters Ray Allen, Kevin Durant & Lonzo Ball.

Interestingly enough JJ Redick said the same thing about his then-teammate Deandre Jordan https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2016/02/24/clippers-jj-redick-deandre-jordan-right-handed-free-throws Who is also left-handed shoots the ball at one time behind his head and who I believe is also right eye dominate.

Here is Deandre shooting a free throw and a 3 pointer, notice how the ball is centered over his right eye.  Now look again at Ben Simmons

Again you can be a successful shooter who is cross-eye dominant just look at Ray Allen or Kevin Durant who both shoot over 40% for 3 pointers and over 85% from the free-throw line. You just have to follow the S.E.D.R.S. shooting philosophy which suggests shooting through your dominant eye. The more concepts you follow the more your shot will improve. The S.E.D.R.S. shooting philosophy looks to point out and acknowledge those basketball shooting concepts which are universally true. Be sure to check the pages on Shooting and Lonzo ball to get a better idea of the proper shooting technique.

Now I’ve heard rumblings that Ben is actually right-handed. Which in that case he would still need to follow the S.E.D.R.S. concepts but shooting right-handed would help with his alignment with his right eye, but I’m working on the premise that Ben is a left-handed shooter. Either way, he would have to follow the same S.E.D.R.S. concepts.

First I believe that Ben Simmons should model his shot after Ray Allen or Kevin Durant since both are very successful cross-eye dominate shooters. I would also suggest that Ben have his shooting hand on the side of the ball like Ray Allen. This will help his alignment when shooting, along with his release. I would also suggest that he shoot either through his dominant right eye (like Kevin Durant) or bring the ball through the middle of his face. Ben should practice watching the flight of the ball, dipping the ball, and turning his shoulders more while getting more of a body lean on his sweep & sway.  By working hard on these concepts in the offseason I have no doubt he will improve his shooting. To reiterate the only things that matter are Arc, Shot Depth, and Alignment. How you improve those things is by following the S.E.D.R.S. shooting philosophy.
